In the same way that Gilles le Breton has returned (hopefully with a model and rules in Spring). Obviously, if this is not personally to your taste, that's your prerogative, but I don't think having an avatar of Sigmar is thematically out of place at all in this environment. In the same way, the End Times seem to be aiming to recapture that spirit of titans clashing on the mortal plane, of bringing Aenarion, Sigmar, Nagash etc into play, rather than being some mystical background figure. If he hadn't been there, the Unberogen would look a lot skinnier and more dishevelled than they do now. The plot has moved on, and in the same way in the 'heroic' past of the Warhammer world, it was Sigmar who destroyed Nagash personally to save the fledgling Empire. It's no longer enough to build a high wall and hope for the best. I get that being the underdog is the Empire's thing, however, these are the End Times. I said nothing about them being "the fat kid in the playground". and frankly, from what I've heard, he doesn't really do the whole "fought well" bit either - he just kinda autowins by his mere presence. "fought well" is just as important as them being "theoretically weak", but they need to exist in balance for the concept to work. Yet they still stand up to Daemons, Greenskins, and Ogres, and usually give just as much as they take. The "underdog" archetype is more akin to David vs Goliath - David was smaller, weaker, less experienced, and had nothing but a silly sling to fight with, but he still stood up to Goliath(read: he had balls), and ultimately won, by using his silly little sling in an intelligent way.Ĭompare with the Empire weak, sluggish, shortlived, with only basic magic and little 'real' supernatural support. if they knew they were going to ascend KF, why bother writing Valten back into the series? Seems odd to have his specialness removed 10 minutes after he got it. Though I'm a bit confused about the role of Valten now. ![]() They were founded after all by a man who ascended to god-hood, so I don't see much of a fluff issue with them having access to an avatar of Sigmar. I can see your point, but then again having the Empire just be the big fat kid in the playground who everyone beats up on does get a bit old. Get a couple of screams into him before that and he's on very shaky ground. That would take off a big chunk of those 9 wounds. Wouldn't the standard ogre blade blender vamp hurt him badly? Sit him next to another model carrying OTS and challenge him out. I totally get why he seems intimidating, but compared to Nagash I think he's a pussy cat and nobody seemed that fussed about the lord of the undead, which I find super weird. ![]() All the while the rest of your army is just totally dominating the small units he has apart from Karl. Or wandering deliberations slann can hit him with iceshard/miasma to nerf him in combat. You could change to taking a high magic slann and go for arcane unforging on him. Want a pair of great cannons, nearly to 2k. A pair of level 2 mages? or just a naked level 3? You're up to 1600-1700 points already. What will such a list look like? You've got Karl and 600 points of core. Think of the normal Empire army you face and take out 1/3 of it. I don't disagree he has a big impact on the game, but he costs 820 points. ![]() Karl Franz Ascended is a bad thing for Warhammer. I don't enjoy that kind of experience, so I say. My victories always come down to a few "Well, this is going to work or I've lost the game" moments that hinge on critically few dice rolls. However I don't have fun playing or even winning against demon prince armies. I beat demon princes all the time and they're in some fashion more broken than Karl. Karl doesn't have to feel rushed to go anywhere. The Ball really is in Karl's court because for the first time since 5th, an army with an ubber super mobile unbelievably killy character ALSO has access to cannons. I do however mean that after 3-4 turns of him wrecking the board of threats (or just sitting back protecting the rest of his army), he can then do that for an essentially assured victory. I do not mean Karl can go straight for my black knights/temple guard on turn 2 and ignore his surroundings completely and win. The most effective strategy I can think of is desperately trying to get movement 4 saurus blocks into him so I can pin him with steadfast and try to get a d3 wounding steagdon charge in there. How long do you except them to last? If the unit doesn't start at full strength, they're dead in 2 rounds of combat.Ĭhampion and character feeding would work, but if there's multiple characters in the unit Karl just has to ignore it and not go in there. Karl's 10 attacks + thunderstomps do an average of 9.6 wounds a turn. I usually run a block of 24 Temple Guard.
